Hyderabad - A Legacy of Education
Hyderabad can boast of some good universities and research centres that
sustain a community of individuals who are dedicated to the achievement of excellence and
who share a vision related to engineering, management and sciences. Osmania University
which was built by the late Nizam in 1939 is one of the oldest universities - the
Nizam
College is built in the Indo- Saracenic style. University of Hyderabad, Jawaharlal
Technological University, Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Telugu University, ANGR
Agricultural University, Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages are the major
educational centres. The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, a world-famous centre
conducts research in frontier and multi- disciplinary areas of moderm biology. The centre
irnparts training to doctoral students in academic programme and also has an active
post-doctoral research programme sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Government
of India and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. In addition, the CCMB
provides training in areas of modem biology for the research worker from both India and
abroad. NIN, DRDO, DLRL, DMRL, RCI, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology are some of
the major research centre. Apart from these are IRISET, ESCI, ASCI, and Sardar Patel
National Police Academy.
ICRISAT - The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid
Tropics, a non-profit and apolitical international organisation for science based
agricultural development has its headquarters at Patancheru. Its focus is to help
developing countries apply science to increase crop productivity and food security and
improving agriculture in the semi-arid tropics.
Besides the above-mentioned there is a plethora of unaffiliated
engineering and management institutes to cater to the ever growing demand in these fields.
ICFAI is one independent institute which has carved a niche for itself and offers long and
short term programs.
There are other grim aspects, which Hyderabad is facing today -
unbridled construction activity, brazen encroachment, scarcity of water, traffic
indiscipline, and social disharmony leading to communal violence - all because of the
burgeoning population leading to urban decay.
In view of this, a voluntary and non-political organisation was formed
called the Society for Preservation of Environment and Quality of Life (SPEQL) with the
main objective of creating necessary awareness among the citizens to protect, preserve,
maintain and harness the natural environment in a sustainable manner. During the last
seven years of its existence, through a bimonthly magazine 'Hyderabad Bachao', they have
highlighted various vital issues such as shortage of water, traffic, transport and
suggested solutions trying to create an awareness among the citizen for a good quality of
life.
