The Internet is a huge collection of computers around the world. These computers are all linked together, and they can "talk" to each other, sharing information.
If your computer is connected to the Internet, it can connect to millions of other computers, in many different parts of the world.
By using the Internet, you can have lots of fun:
- You can send electronic letters to people.
- You can read pages on the World Wide Web.
- You can play games with people on the other side of the world.
- You can chat to people.
- You can even buy things on the Internet and have them delivered to your house!
The World Wide Web is a part of the Internet. It is a collection of millions of pages of information. This information can be about anything:
- Sport Films
- Television Music
- Places around the World School
- Food Computer Games
- Animals Shopping
- Moving Around World Wide Web Pages
The pages on the World Wide Web are all linked so that you can move around them.
The pages are linked together using Hyperlinks.
If you move your mouse over a hyperlink, it will change to the shape of a hand.
If you click on a hyperlink, you will go to a different page.
You can usually tell if something is a hyperlink because it is coloured in blue and it is underlined.
HOW TO SEARCH THE WEB
The World Wide Web contains millions and millions of pages of information. Searching through this information can sometimes be like searching for a needle in a haystack - absolutely impossible.
It is very easy to find lots of web-sites which don't contain the information that you need, and it sometimes seems that you are never going to find what you want to know. However, don't get stressed if you can't find something....
Just follow the simple rules and you will be able to search the Internet easily and quickly.
There are a number of ways of searching the Internet. The first (and most time-consuming) is to visit the web-sites that you already know about and click on links which look like they could take you to the information which you need. However, searching in this way might not lead you to the information which you need. You could also get distracted, and follow links which take you further away from what you want.
Luckily, there are some very special web sites on the Internet. These are called search engines and they make it much easier to find the information (and the web pages) that you need.
All you have to do is visit a search engine, tell it what you would like to find out about, and it will show you hyperlinks which point to the correct information. However, sometimes, it might point you to information which is not quite what you were looking for. So, it is very important that you learn how to use these search engines correctly, because it will help you to find information more quickly and easily.
