Kids are irresistible, whatever they do is something which no other kid has
ever done for their parents. Be it a throw of a ball which broke their neighbours window or be it a prize which he had won. Their whole world revolves around their kids.
Children being children keep badgering for things which are not made for them. Try telling them this and they will create a havoc. No fault of theirs because they don't understand, why they have been denied to have these things. Well how do we make them understand is a million dollar question.
General practice of many mothers is to scare them by telling it will harm them in someway or just tell them that if they touch those things some monster will take them away. But does it really help the parents in stopping them? It might, for sometime but then, in the long run it will effect the child's natural instinct of inquisitiveness.
Try asking a child psychologist how to handle children in situations like this, and the doctor will present you with a 101 ways, of which none of them will apply to your child when you are facing a real messy situation with them. And every kid has his own individuality. You cannot assume that a trick which is working with your neighbour's child will apply for your kid too. So, for most mothers its a trial and error situation.
So the general things that may apply for many kids are
Ask your kid why he is not willing to go to school. It might be the case of a his teacher being too strict on him or might be the case of classmates troubling him. Speak to his teachers.

If you are both working and your kid has to stay home alone for a lot of time then, better ask your neighbours to keep an eye on him.
Get to know your kids friends too, it might inturn help you in understanding him much better.
Encourage your kids to ask questions. Its very irritating to answer them all but your kid will be more wiser than those who don't ask.
Check your kids things once in a while, you never know what you will find. But don't get caught by them, it will make them think that you are intruding.
Have kids parties at your place once in a while, it will make your kid proud in telling his friends
