WHAT THE PRESS HAS TO SAY
INDIA TODAY
A product of the growing genre of US-centric films about Indians, yet strikingly distinct. It is a sensitive portrayal of the trials and tribulations of a first time from India in an American university and how he grapples with the contradictions in trying to retain his identity and self-esteem.
The Inscrutable Americans brings out the subtle nuances of the novel. The cast is American except the lead character RAJIV PUNJA who hails from Bangalore and all do an excellent job. It’s a hilarious account of the travails of an Indian from a small town in Madhya Pradesh. But it is not just having a laugh at the Americans and Indians, there’re more serious dimensions as well to the movie.
Indians strike again. Out of software territory, out of the blue an Indian has made it big in planet movie land in the Big Apple. Rajiv Punja after a wealth of theatre work behind him makes his celluloid debut in The Inscrutable Americans. The film has been short listed to participate in the New York film festival and Milano fest.
THE ASIAN AGE
The Inscrutable Americans enjoys cult status in India. Now the film version hopefully will do an encore. Chandra Siddartha in a coup of sorts got the rights for the book from the author Anurag Mathur, who preferred him to others because he liked Siddartha’s way of adapting the book.
