The experience of a small town guy from India studying in USA makes for a compelling story and The Inscrutable Americans is no exception. Based on the best selling book by Anurag Mathur the movie is a faithful adaptation of the book.
Gopal is the name of the protagonist who hails from Jajau, Madhya Pradesh, India..Gopal comes to America to pursue a course in chemical engineering. His knowledge of America stems from the book Collected letters of Playboy and Hollywood films.
The film is a hilarious account of how Gopal adjusts to life in America. His initial problems stem from his inability to understand the American slang and taking things literally. Then with his exuberant pal Randy he explores the salacious side of America.
What makes the movie stand out are the deeper issues it deals with. Gopal is rudely awakened from his picture postcard view of America by a racist attack on himself and Randy. Traumatized, he discovers that even America has its share of poverty, homelessness and is a nation still struggling to unify its peoples of different races into a single community.
Gopal as a result comes of age as he realizes that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
