The Indian Institute of Information Technology
(IIIT)
-
The Future of Education
Part of the Vision 2020 program is
establishment of the first Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) to provide quality education
to the computer wizards of
tomorrow. The institute is located in the Gacchibowli area, on the outskirts
of Hyderabad. An autonomous, industry-managed and funded centre, it offers
undergraduate and postgraduate courses in information technology and related
fields.
At IIIT, there are schools of IBM, Metamor and Oracle, the Baan Institute
for ERP, the Competency Centre of Java (India) and the E-governance
concept centre. The future will see the setting up of research and development
centers by Microsoft, Oracle, Motorola, DE Shaw, Citicorp, Mentor Graphics,
Funschool.com, Intrak Global, Oak Brook Technologies and World Wide Web
Institute, to name a few.
All in all, the proposed objective of
IIIT is to be a premier global institute for providing education and training
in IT, its applications to management, undertaking R&D in core IT areas,
developing applications for social sectors and affiliation with leading
universities across the globe.
Conceptually, IIIT is a collegiate university and will be one
of its kinds offering long-term degree programs, B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. with a
maximum availability of 300- 400 seats in each. While M Tech, and Ph.D. courses
will commence only in the year 2000 and 2001, classes for B.Tech students have
commenced from August 1998.
In addition to the regular curriculum, short-term
programs in Core Competence will be offered by the eight IT companies. They will be setting
up corporate schools soon. Run individually by the companies, the training will
cover various areas of specialization. The corporate school's computer labs,
classrooms and the teaching faculty will be shared with the long-term MT
courses.
IT companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Satyam and Metamor have
entered into agreements to set up schools here. The school will be an autonomous body headed by a director with a
governing council as its
apex body and academic council. The IIIT will draw its finances from different
sources including contributions from the corporate schools, interest on the
corpus fund, student fees, research collaborations and sponsorship of chairs,
facilities scholarships etc by corporate promoters.
